As the morning sun set over Washington, the polished black granite reflected both the names of the fallen and the fading light of the day. Standing before the Vietnam Veterans Memorial is unlike visiting almost any other monument. There are no statues celebrating victory. No towering declarations of triumph. Only names. More than fifty-eight thousand of them. Each one belonged to a son, a daughter, a husband, a wife, a father, a friend. Every name represents a story interrupted, a family forever changed, and a sacrifice that cannot be measured.

As I looked down the length of the wall, the words of Jesus came quietly to mind:

"Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends."

Those words point beyond every battlefield. They remind us that every act of sacrificial love ultimately reflects the heart of Christ Himself.

The men and women remembered here answered a call that required extraordinary courage. Many never returned home. Their willingness to give everything deserves our gratitude and our remembrance. Yet even the greatest human sacrifice points us to an even greater love.

Jesus willingly laid down His life, not only for His friends, but for the very people who had turned away from Him. Through His death and resurrection, He secured a hope that reaches beyond every war, every grave, and every generation.

As the sunlight reflects across this memorial, it quietly reminds us that sacrifice is never forgotten. Love leaves a legacy. And the greatest love of all still calls us to remember, to give thanks, and to live lives worthy of the freedoms, both earthly and eternal ,that have been purchased at such great cost.
